Betty Lehan Harragan's Games Mother Never Taught You was a landmark book when it came out in 1977. For women who've hauled themselves up that career ladder but are running out of rungs, or for those who missed the first wave of advice on career strategy, Patricia Smith's book snythesizes Ms. Harragan's and other lessons of the past two decades.

Some women will find it a good refresher course; others will find it revealing.

Her premise is that there are male and female career paths. Capable women may settle for less than they deserve because they don't understand the two paths, the author says. "Women are likely to complete tasks rather than get results, to be "other-oriented" and act as cheerleaders, to fantasize about how workplaces should operate.

"Women see themselves for their potential to do the job at hand...," sys Ms. Smith. "We want to be measured on how hard we work, what long hours we work, and how accurate our work is."
