Executive Book Summary
WIN OR LOSE: It's How You Play the Game

It's a fact: Women who work with men in traditionally male fields make more money than women in so-called "female" career paths who work alongside other women. As Smith sees it, women have three choices: They can continue to cheer men from the sidelines, helping them win in hopes they will allowed to play someday. They can stand on the sidelines and scream, "This game is unfair." Or they can learn the rules, run onto the field, and join in the game. This is what Smith proposes. "Whether the rules make sense does not matter," she writes. "If you want to make more money, the most assured way is to do the jobs that pay more."

Get in the Game

Each of Us offers some basic tips to women who are willing to play by the big-boys' rules. First, stop pegging yourself as either career - or family-oriented. You don't have to be one or the other. Men blend the two interests. So can you. Make sure others see you as a career woman, however. Dress the part. For women, this means the standard dress-for-success uniform: tailored, dark business suits, low heels, and minimal baubles. Use pockets, not purses. Find out what you're doing that is inappropriate to your new career goals, and then change your attitude and your behavior. Take the right steps to get a better-paying job.

Do It Right

Smith details each step, showing readers how to write a resume, interview, negotiate, and find the work that pays. She also devotes an entire chapter to arguing for a career in sales (it's a stepping stone you can enter at any time and offers measurable value to the company.) Some readers may chafe under Smith's conservative tutelage. But, as she points out, women don't make the rules, at least not yet.
