Patricia Smith's book Each of Us responds to the fact that although women comprise more than half of the work force, we earn significantly less than our male counterparts. Smith writes that although many women believe they are being held back because they lack the proper education, skills, and ambition to qualify for high-paying positions, most women are more qualified than they realize. Smith's book is a primer for women to use to make more money.
The book begins by laying out the premise that there are two classifications in the business world:
- "Women are divided (by themselves and others) into two groups: career women or regular women.
- Male and female job tracks exist, and the male job tracks pay considerably better."
- Smith urges readers to reject the first classification. Men make no such classification about themselves, and the jobs they do are infinitely varied. However, according to Smith, the second classification is valid, and she urges readers to pursue "male" job tracks if they want to earn more money in Corporate America.
