T.I.P.S. - To Improve Pay and Success
Ambiguous Feelings About Work
Many tell us that in order to be successful, we must have definite, clear goals. This sounds so simple. Many of us even have these goals clearly in mind, at least until another conflicting goal becomes more clear.
Many of us approach our work and careers with ambiguous goals and feelings. We know we want and need this job, but we may also have strong feelings about other priorities in our life. These conflicting feelings are likely to surface during an interview, if only subtly. Maybe we are building our own business on the side and hope to quit as soon as we can justify it. If we have children, we may feel guilty about working at all, convinced it is something we are somehow doing against the welfare of our families. The men we interview against are convinced that work is something they do for their families. They are as likely as we are to be planning an exit, even as they interview.

While we cannot always find a way to reconcile all our feelings, we can put these feelings aside when we are working and as we interview. If you are working, spend your energy and concentration there. Don’t let other feelings degrade your performance. If other priorities are strong enough to warrant a change, then work toward change. But don’t allow those feelings to interfere with the job at hand.
As you interview for positions, be aware that other candidates are presenting themselves as fully committed. Yet these same people have real lives and families, also. If you want the job, you must project complete commitment. It’s really not that hard when you make up your mind to project an image that might be different than your feelings at the time. If this feels dishonest, try to get over it. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
