Answering a Want Ad

In the past few days, I have received over 50 calls in response to an ad for a part-time clerical position. I am using today's tip to reflect on the phone calls which are so fresh in my mind. Many positions are advertised in the newspaper. Anyone in the market for a job should read the want ads and follow up on those of interest. Based on my experience of the past few days, I recommend:

Do read the want ads as soon as the newspaper is released. Many others will, and if you wait a couple of days, you will be bringing up the rear in your request. The employer may be sick and tired of calls by the time you respond. While you may be the best candidate, you may be considered tardy.

Don't act surprised when someone answers the telephone. Don't state that you expected a recording, or thought you were talking to a machine.

Don't require the person answering to answer more than once with your prolonged silence. Be ready to begin speaking when the telephone is answered. Do not be in the middle of a conversation with someone else, or eating food. Speak up pleasantly and immediately. Identify yourself and your reason for calling.

Don't start out by asking the name of the company and what line of business they are in. Such drilling is not professional and may be resented by someone answering the telephone. There will be plenty of time to establish this information.

Do state your name (first and last) and indicate your interest in the advertised position. Do let the other party finish talking if they begin. They may have some statements or questions which help narrow their list of applicants. Do ask for an interview. If an interview is not granted, offer to fax your resume. Indicate you will call again, after your resume has been received, and when to expect your call.

When we respond to an ad with a phone call, the first impression made is on the telephone. Careful and simple etiquette should prevail. Don't blow your chance with a company before they even know your name. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
