T.I.P.S. - To Improve Pay and Success
Ask for More Than You Want
There are many negotiating strategies, but the most basic is to ask for more than you are willing to accept. Whether this be salary, supplies, staff, or office space, don'' provide your low-ball figure out of the gate.
If we begin at the bottom, we have no where to go. Women are more often guilty of this, since we are unaware of the need for negotiating. Maybe we believe things would go more smoothly if everyone was more "honest." It does not matter if we agree with the way things are done. We need to follow existing protocol. If we begin by asking for exactly what we want, there is no room for negotiation.

A general rule of thumb is to ask for twice what we are willing to accept. You may be asked "What is the minimum you will accept?" This does not necessarily mean we are expected to provide this information. You may hear "Our absolute top offer is..." several times before a deal is struck. Come down slowly and reluctantly. Allow plenty of silence to establish your credibility and maintain your bearings. You may believe you are seen as stubborn and uncooperative. In fact, you may be seen as savvy and more worthy of your requests.
Negotiations are taking place around us, in our professional and personal lives. It is time for us to recognize them and participate. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments can make a big difference.
