T.I.P.S. - To Improve Pay and Success
Avoiding a Layoff
Beyond the
loss of life and security, 9-11 has altered
the American job market in even the most unlikely industries. Many
large and small corporations were reporting major layoffs before,
now the situation has intensified.
While none of us wants to face losing our jobs, it is a reality
we live with. Take a close look at your attitude, it can help you
stay employed. If you are laid off in spite of it, a healthy attitude
will help you become employed again more quickly. As companies
cut back on employees, they keep those who they consider to be
the most valuable and effective. In theses decisions, personalities
often mean more than skills.
When other things are equal, those who have
a positive "can
do" attitude, even in the face of adversity, are more likely
considered keepers. Those who insist on following tried and true
methods and processes may be seen as holding up the works. People
who are creative and inventive about how to accomplish what needs
to be done, are needed more than ever. Employees who point out
the reasons why new ideas won't work are often shown the door.
The team is smaller, so team players are considered over those
who have trouble operating as part of a group. Of course, people
who are willing to "go the extra mile," offering more
than the project requires, are seen as more valuable. As always,
this extra contribution usually has to be pointed out in some subtle
way.
All of us can think of people we work with who have some negative
attitudes and characteristics. Unfortunately, it is much more difficult
to evaluate ourselves. Ask a trusted colleague to help you see
yourself as others see you. Be aware of your reactions and remarks,
and how they may be interpreted by others. Consider the attributes
needed when the employment belt is tightened. Awareness is the
first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
