Dress to Fit Your Aspirations

I am not the first to suggest that business people dress as the if they already have the position they ultimately aspire to have. If the people around you are dressed casually, you may think you would feel more comfortable, both socially and physically, dressed as they. But you may be jeopardizing your chances of being taken seriously, of being seen for your capabilities, and of moving up.

Sales people sometimes argue that their clients are dressed casually, why should they dress differently? But sales people are representing their company, not their clients’ organizations. In a business setting, you are representing yourself. You are constantly selling yourself and your capabilities. Don’t give yourself something else to overcome.

Women have told me how much difference professional clothing can make, even when the people around them are dressed casually. I know a woman who decided to wear a dark suit everyday as a temporary. A man in a dirty sweatshirt commented on her clothing. She briefly considered dressing more casually, but decided against it. Before long, she asked to be interviewed for a position she wanted. She was hired and began a successful career. You represent yourself, not those around you. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
