T.I.P.S. - To Improve Pay and Success
Humility and the Job Search
There is nothing quite so humbling as looking for a new job. Especially
when we are out of work, instead of enthusiastic, we can easily
appear desperate. As we compete against men and women for high-paying
positions, it is more important than ever to project confidence
in ourselves and our abilities. This is sometimes tougher for women,
we value humility more highly, and often see confidence as bravado.
Remember the 40% rule. When a group of women
were asked, "What
percentage of the skills do you need to be qualified for a job?" the
women responded "100%". The average man's response was" 40%." (
Each of Us, chapter 2.) If we see the job as requiring much less
of us, we will automatically feel more confident in our abilities.
This kind of perception may cause us to move from feeling under-qualified
to feeling over-qualified for the same job!
Beyond feeling confident, we must practice the
age-old art of "fake
it till we make it.." No employer wants to hire a high-maintenance
employee. Hold your head high and take three deep breaths before
the interview. You are a strong, capable woman. You will be an
asset to this corporation. They probably don't expect as much of
you as you do of yourself. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments
make a big difference.
