I Work Here

Work is more than the way we make a living. It often becomes our circle of friends and an outlet for our social selves. However, intimacy with those around you at work can keep you from your career goals. It is difficult to be seen as a competent professional when your peers know the intimate details of your life.

The office gossip loop is a dangerous place to be. Whether you are speaking about, or being spoken about, it is better to not participate. As a friend of mine says, "It’s none of my business what you think of me." Avoiding office gossip can be hard, but it is vital if you are to stand out as a professional.

Tomorrow, try applying the motto "I work here." In other words, I don’t come here for intimate friendship, emotional support, legal advice, or dating possibilities. The less ingrained you are in the office social circle, the easier it will be to break away when another opportunity comes along. If you already stand out from the crowd, you may automatically be considered more "promotable." Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
