Leadership Styles

I heard about a woman who went to a career coach, convinced that she needed to leave the job she was in. After plenty of soul-searching, she was able to verbalize what she really needed from her work. It was recognition and praise. She approached her manager and told him this. He said, "That’s not the way I am. I won’t do that." Rather than quit on the spot, she decided to give up on that job perk. She quit working so hard for his "approval" and was able to enjoy the job much more.

In 1994, the National Foundation for Women Business owners commissioned a research project. The results were not surprising. Male-led organizations were more likely to resemble a hierarchy or pyramid pattern. Female leaders tended to prefer to be at the center, rather than the top of their organizations. Since then, much has been written about the different leadership styles of men and women. Of course, both sexes can exhibit and benefit from various leadership styles. Women can help change the character of American business, one at a time.

Try to adjust if your manager, male or female, leads differently than you would prefer. You may be putting investing too much of yourself in how someone else acts and reacts. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
