T.I.P.S. - To Improve Pay and Success
You May Qualify for a Bonus
According to Business and Professional Women/USA, the problem
for some women may not be a salary gap, but a benefits gap. In
corporate America, male leaders are awarded stock options and other
bonuses as much as 20 to 30 times greater in value than those awarded
to their female counterparts.
Some of this may be attributed to knowledge. We can ask and negotiate
for our fair share when we know what it is. Men tend to talk about
their salaries, commissions and bonuses with one another. Women
are much more likely to keep this to ourselves. As a result, someone
can give us 20 to 30 times less and get away with it.

Don’t wait until you believe there is a disparity. Get in
the habit of discussing salaries and benefits with your male colleagues.
This might be very hard to break into, but remember that they are
used to this kind of talk, even if they are not used to talking
to women about it. Be sure to stick around when the subject of
compensation comes up, listen and participate when you can. "I
heard some are receiving up to 1% of their annual income as an
end-year bonus. Do you know anything about this?"
Women’s discomfort with the subject of
money has been used against us far too long. Awareness is the
first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
