Small Improvements Mean Business Savvy

Each of my tips ends the same way. "Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference." Each of Us readers have told me how true this is. Small adjustments can make a huge difference. They can change the way we are perceived, the way we perform, and the way we are compensated.

We don’t have to be perfect at this game of business. We just have to be a little better. Certainly you can think of a male colleague who has business shortcomings. This probably doesn’t stop him from pursuing assignments and positions. He may be working on improving his skills.

Once we become aware of those attitudes and behaviors which stand in our way, we can begin the process of altering some of them. This does not require a change of personality, ethics, or intelligence. It may require practice.

Too often we believe the people around us have some natural talent we lack. We can’t imagine them practicing asking for a raise in front of a mirror, or role playing negotiations with their spouses. All of us are naturally gifted in some areas, but all of us have to practice many things.

Decide today what change you want to make in your attitude and behavior at work (see Each of Us.) Begin your change tomorrow. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.
