Stereotyping Careers

According to Equity Resource Center, children begin to eliminate careers between the ages of six and eight because they are the wrong "sex type." The most assured way to earn more is to do the jobs which pay more. We can fight for more pay in staff and support jobs as long as we work, but we will fail.

In all honesty, I can understand why boys are not anxious to do many female jobs, but how can we encourage the daughters of this country to look at all opportunities as they consider their careers? Why is pay such a low consideration when 99% of them will work for a living?

At six to eight years old, most parents are not explaining the difference in salary or wages between different jobs. Quite the contrary, I tried to help my children see that all work was worthwhile and all workers worthy of dignity and respect. Yet that is when our children are identifying themselves as one sex or the other, and observing the workers around them.

Role models exist, although they are rare in some occupations. We need to have our daughters see these role models, and meet them if possible. Awareness is the first step. Small adjustments make a big difference.

This site is for working women everywhere, to help improve their success, pay, and self-confidence.
