Wear a Dark Jacket, Everyday, All Day

Dressing for Success has changed fairly dramatically over the past few years, for both men and women. But, the fact still remains that we are judged first by our appearance. People who are seen as professional, intelligent, and effective are considered for new opportunities (when they ask for them.) Many of us are sabotaging our efforts as we struggle to overcome our clothing.

A dark, conservative business suit, with matching skirt and jacket is still the least-risky attire for the aspiring woman. However, this might be so far removed from the "casual office" attire around you, that it may cause you feel self-conscious. That doesn't mean, however, that anything goes.

The office is not a fashion show. All our efforts to look "feminine but professional," attractive yet serious" can be too easily be misinterpreted. The people around you are probably completely unaware of the affect your clothing has on their impression, but it's happening. You can easily (and affordably) gain the image you're after, even if the there are no dress guidelines in your office.

Purchase a few dark, tailored jackets that can be worn over blouses, with pants or skirt. Keep your jacket on all day at work. You can often find a nice assortment of professional blazers at your local consignment shop. Acceptable colors, while boring, include; navy, charcoal gray, black, and maroon. Try to envision a board room, with dark suits all around except for one lavender jacket. It is your goal to fit in with the decision-makers, not stand out.

If you don't like this idea, try it anyway. Wear a dark blazer to work everyday for two weeks and see if it helps you and the people around you see you as a bona fide adult. When surveyed, women who have a business degree from Harvard reported that image is very important to their success. If it is important for them, think what it must mean to the rest of us.
